Although it’s been several years since Microsoft ceased disclosing console sales figures, it’s now been roughly four years since the latest console generation emerged, and the disparity is increasingly evident: Microsoft’s Xbox duo lags significantly behind its direct competitor, the PlayStation 5. With updated estimates of contemporary gross sales emerging, a clearer picture has unfolded regarding the performance of Microsoft’s and Sony’s current console offerings, shedding further light on their respective market penetration.
According to a recent video uploaded by the Wall Street Journal, featuring gross sales data from analyst agency Aldora Intelligence, an estimated 28.3 million units of combined Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S shipments have been recorded as of June 30. The PlayStation 5 has shipped approximately 61.7 million units globally to date, dwarfing its direct rivals with more than double their sales figures.
By June last year, Microsoft revealed that Xbox Series X/S sales had surpassed 21 million units globally at that point in time. Microsoft’s gaming revenue has shown steady growth thanks to Activision Blizzard, whereas its hardware revenue remains stagnant, implying a persistent decline in Xbox Series X/S sales.
