The highly anticipated XCOM: Chimera Squad has received a release date from 2K and Firaxis, accompanied by an extended gameplay preview as previously promised. The reveal event also showcases Gwendoline Christie, acclaimed actor and narrator of the forthcoming 4X strategy game, unveiling extensive details regarding several key gameplay updates that players can expect.
One key adjustment in the central loop will be the introduction of a novel age-based system. Gamers have witnessed their virtual worlds evolve across diverse eras in previous titles, but this time they’ll experience a three-age narrative – Antiquity, where agricultural societies thrive; Exploration, where empires rise and collaborate through trade and diplomacy; and Modern Age, marked by rapid technological advancements, some of which will have devastating consequences.
As civilizations progress through time, they’ll be characterized by distinct attributes and components, including map-located resources to exploit, researchable technologies and civics, a diverse array of units and buildings, and further features. As you navigate historical epochs, a departure from traditional title sequences where each era’s selection would reset the slate clean, the decisions you make in one Age will now have far-reaching consequences on the next, fostering a dynamic empire that evolves organically, reflecting your cumulative choices as its leader across the ages.
Throughout history, societal transformations will occur at an unprecedented pace, propelling human civilization forward in uncharted directions. As you play through the various eras, you’ll have the opportunity to experience a new civilization with each Age, rather than being tied to a single one. Players have the flexibility to embark on a comprehensive journey, exploring every Age in a single campaign, while also having the ability to engage in individual Age-specific quests for a more focused experience.
As a result of introducing Ages, leadership dynamics are undergoing a profound transformation. Historically, the choice of civilization or leader has been intricately linked, influencing everything from policy decisions to available units and technological advancements. However, in this game, the connection between leaders and civilizations will be severed, allowing players to select whichever civilization they prefer, with the freedom to play as any leader of their choice. Players can further personalise their leaders by allocating attributes gained from in-game achievements. What would you like to see in the showcase?
The highly anticipated game launches globally on February 11, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms.
