As a fledgling enthusiast of role-playing games, I embarked on the uncharted terrain of 2024 with an air of curiosity and amateurism. As I sink into the depths of nostalgia, I find myself captivated by the pixelated realm of December, a month where I sacrifice precious sleep to conquer a few more levels in the reimagined NES classic from 1988. How did this occur?
The sudden proliferation of exceptional role-playing games within a compressed timeframe was bound to convert even the most skeptical individuals into fervent enthusiasts. I once stood tall as a fragile sandcastle, precariously perched before the inevitable arrival of a towering tsunami. I’m tempted to agree. What builders specializing in this style achieved collectively this year surpasses the significance of scale, showcasing a depth of complexity and intrigue.
As I reflected on the past year, I began to notice subtle changes within myself.

Within the Like a Dragon series’ latest installment, I find myself adapting to a genre previously less endearing to me: the turn-based RPG. What’s the point of taking turns managing a menu when you’re already overwhelmed with worries about road signs and potential altercations? I’m not alone. Numerous iconic developers of turn-based role-playing games have opted for a shift to real-time gameplay, seeking to captivate even the most skeptical, including myself?
However, this perception doesn’t mesh with my expectations of turn-based RPGs. As I unleash the battle’s kinetic energy, I’m granted the freedom to dance around the fray, strategically repositioning my brawlers to orchestrate an explosive and visually stunning cinematic sequence. Each participant will receive a unique role. Gunslinger! Surfing’s iconic figure, riding the waves with reckless abandon! Unleash a torrent of hilarious mayhem, as comedians clash in a sidesplitting free-for-all.
With its plethora of enchanting open-world settings, an obscenely intricate Animal Crossing send-up, and tenderly crafted dialogue that’s both witty and warm, I found myself utterly entranced, clocking in at a whopping 85 hours before succumbing to Steam’s siren song.
The creators’ unbridled enthusiasm for the turn-based RPGs that preceded their own work is more than evident. Nostalgic allusions abound in this odyssey, drawing parallels with beloved series such as Dragon Quest and Pokémon. Despite its traditions, the sport isn’t overly formal. Constructors harmonize contemporary themes with the design at its inception, crafting something captivating for dedicated RPG enthusiasts, as well as newcomers like myself, lacking both the knowledge and stamina to tolerate the franchise’s most enduring idiosyncrasies.
Helped me reexamine turn-based RPGs from a fresh perspective, prompting a sudden shift in my appreciation for the genre’s unique mechanics and nuances.

In this region, the scarcity of high-quality role-playing games has a significant impact. This significant fragment is a substantial part of the larger picture.
In the first quarter, our company acquired three notable titles: a visually striking role-playing game that reimagines an iconic franchise, a reboot of a beloved series from the 80s, and a revival of a cult classic.
Craft a captivating open-world experience reminiscent of Ubisoft’s role-playing mastery, where players embark on thrilling adventures across vast, vibrant landscapes. Seek a unique indie film that diverges from your extensive repertoire of recent releases. ! Feeling nostalgic for some old-time favourites, did you? The popular mobile game hit consoles and has now also appeared on Google Play. All earlier than April!
While some video games stand out from the rest, only a select few managed to keep my attention for more than just a few days. Despite the sheer volume of new titles flooding the market, I found myself struggling to manage my leisure hours effectively. I had put off attempting to tackle new creative projects, instead refining my skills in the realm of RPGs, and before I knew it, I’d been fully immersed for nearly six months?
As summer drew to a close, I had experimented with creating every type of game, from hardcore technique-driven RPGs to child-friendly turn-based Mario-style RPGs. As my long-dormant passion for role-playing games lay dormant, waiting to ignite at the slightest provocation.

Developed by the creators of the esteemed Persona and Shin Megami series, this new fantasy RPG promises to deliver an immersive experience that combines intricate storytelling with challenging gameplay. While the franchise is notorious for its lengthy narratives, demanding difficulty levels, and traditional turn-based combat mechanics, fans of the genre can expect a fresh take on these classic elements. The renowned studio is responsible for crafting iconic music, visuals, and storytelling in video games; as a result, I’ve spent countless hours immersing myself in their critically acclaimed RPGs, albeit never quite making it to the credits.
Undeterred by initial reservations, my zeal continued to build momentum throughout the pre-launch period.
The very first thing you’ll discover about this game is that it’s a role-playing game that takes itself remarkably seriously – in the best possible way, of course. Intriguingly, fans of this strategic endeavour often remark, “Things will surely pick up after the initial 15-hour grind.” Yet, for many newcomers, navigating the game’s intricate mechanics can be a daunting task, as they’re forced to wade through labyrinthine menus in search of meaningful action. Gaming time can easily get consumed by repetitive dungeon crawling and tweaking character builds, rather than focusing on overall progress. I really hope you’re looking forward to studying dialogue and watching cutscenes.
Prior to this, I would have easily invested two hours in a pursuit like that, categorizing it under “Something others enjoy” and sub-classifying it as “Not my cup of tea.”
On our journey to Fantazio, an unexpected comical twist arose. My extensive experience with role-playing games has taught me the characteristics that define a genre. Taught me to uncover the innovative possibilities hidden within the realm of turn-based combat. Unleashed the secrets of my inner world by embracing the realm of fantasy. I was finally forced to grasp how entirely distinct lessons operate, rather than haphazardly applying my methods through menus. Experiencing the thrill of finally grasping a previously unknown language, I felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment as I read my first full book written in it with ease.

Evidently, I’m hooked. I simply wrapped myself in determination and now, I’ve sunk my teeth right into a challenge that my previous self never would have considered. While the original NES game’s battle system is engagingly enhanced, its narrative is somewhat lacking and necessitates countless hours of tedious turn-based combat against enemies that arbitrarily appear. However, I kept in mind how much my team members enjoyed receiving tasks from me? Were we pushing boundaries during the iconic decade of the 1980s? In 2024, I can genuinely appreciate the scale and complexity of these massive online games’ historical milestones.
As a seasoned gamer, I’ve developed a taste for diverse digital cuisine, happily devouring whatever virtual delights come my way. For years, my voracious appetite would mysteriously subside whenever a turn-based RPG materialized on my desk. I’m thrilled to see my refined palate has emerged. As I’ve recently discovered, the unassuming charm of greens isn’t just for kids anymore. Dishes can only be truly exceptional when prepared with care and served with a dash of flair?
